Fianna Fáil Deputy, Malcolm Byrne, has expressed deep concern following Jim Gavin’s unexpected withdrawal from the presidential race, calling it a "shock" and "disappointment" for the party. Speaking on Morning Mix the North Wexford Fianna Fail TD highlighted questions surrounding Gavin’s failure to disclose a significant property issue during the candidate vetting process. He emphasized that senior party figures, including party leader Micheál Martin and Deputy Leader Jack Chambers, are accountable for the flawed vetting process, given their roles in presenting Gavin to the parliamentary party. Byrne also called for a thorough investigation into what happened during the vetting process, urging party leaders to provide answers to both party members and the public. He stressed that the issue needs to be addressed swiftly, not just to restore party credibility, but to ensure transparency moving forward. Despite his concerns, Byrne reaffirmed his ongoing support for Martin and Chambers, while acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and the need for swift action to prevent further damage to the party’s standing. Meanwhile, Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher is accusing his party of not doing due diligence before choosing Jim Gavin as its presidential election candidate. In September Jim Gavin overcame Billy Kelleher to represent Fianna Fail in the competition, which has now become a two horse race between Heather Humphreys and Catherine Connolly.
