Man Before Wexford Court on Charges Linked to Incident in Which New Ross Teen Died

A 19-year-old man has appeared before Wexford District Court facing nine charges arising from an incident in which 14-year-old Sophie Caulfield was fatally injured.

Martin McCarthy, of Oaktree Avenue in Enniscorthy, is charged with offences including dangerous driving and failing to stop following the incident at Sheastown, Wellingtonbridge on July 8th.

Sophie, who was from New Ross, was seriously injured and died nine days later at Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

Mr McCarthy is also accused of offences relating to a second vehicle, including theft, dangerous driving, criminal damage and driving without insurance.

Wexford District Court was told the case was before Judge John Cheatle for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The court also heard Mr McCarthy had been arrested for allegedly failing to comply with a requirement to sign on at his local Garda station as part of his bail conditions.

Judge Cheatle warned him that he must comply with those conditions.

The case has been adjourned until December 8th when the court is due to hear the DPP’s directions.
