Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne has introduced a new bill aimed at protecting the title “accountant” in Ireland. The Companies (Protection of Title: Accountant) Bill 2025 seeks to make it illegal for any individual or company to call themselves an “accountant” unless they are properly qualified and recognised by the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority (IAASA). Byrne emphasized that consumers deserve to know they are engaging with a qualified professional who is accountable to a recognised regulatory body. “This Bill is about trust, transparency, and protection,” he said, ensuring that the title “accountant” is reserved for those who meet recognised standards and oversight. The bill, seconded by Deputy Albert Dolan, aims to bring the title “accountant” in line with the legal recognition of the title “auditor” under the Companies Act 2014. It will help strengthen public trust in financial professionals, prevent misuse of the title and ensure only qualified individuals can identify as accountants. Penalties for misusing the title include fines of up to €50,000 or up to five years in prison. Company directors who allow breaches could also face personal liability. IAASA will oversee compliance, maintain a register of recognised accountancy bodies, and enforce penalties when necessary.
