Passage East Ferry has announced a new strategic partnership with the Waterford Estuary Villages’ Alliance, or WEVA, aimed at protecting the maritime heritage and future of communities on both sides of the estuary.
The ferry provides a key link between Passage East in County Waterford and Ballyhack in County Wexford, connecting communities across the River Suir.
WEVA brings together five traditional fishing villages — Passage East and Cheekpoint in Waterford, along with Ballyhack, Arthurstown and Duncannon in Wexford.
The alliance was established to help revive the cultural and economic life of the estuary villages following the decline of the fishing industry which once closely connected them.
Passage East Ferry, part of Frazer Ferries, says the partnership reflects a shared commitment to the communities and environment surrounding the estuary.
Peter Hayes of Passage East Ferry said the company’s connection to the area goes beyond simply operating a ferry service.
He said:
“We work on these waters every day and connect communities on both sides of the estuary, so protecting this unique body of water, its heritage and its future is something that matters to us.”
WEVA chairman Walter Foley said the ferry is central to plans to better connect the shoreline communities and unlock the potential of the estuary.
He said the groups hope to work together on projects including a network of heritage trails and a proposed blueway.
The alliance has already organised activities across both Waterford and Wexford, including nine heritage events during National Heritage Week 2026.
The new partnership will also seek to encourage more businesses and organisations operating around the estuary to become involved in protecting its heritage, environment and communities.
