Planning Applications Lodged For Waterford Airport Extension

A planning application has been submitted for a major extension to the terminal building at Waterford Airport.

Waterford Live reports the proposal includes arrival and departure facilities, a food and beverage unit, duty free store, coffee shop and a canteen.

A two-storey 416 square metre extension to the side and rear of the existing airport fire station building is also proposed.

There are also plans for bike shelters, landscaping, and a number of associated site works.

A second proposal is also going to be sent forward which would create 8 new hanger units.

The two applications were submitted to Waterford City and County Council on Friday and are currently at the pre-validation stage.

It's hoped these proposals, if successful, will help in the Airport's bid to re-establish commerical flights from the region.

Around 140,000 people passed through Waterford Airport annually during its busiest years but there has not been a regular passenger service at the airport since 2016.

US oil billionaire, Kelcy Warren is set to invest 30 million euro to develop the airport following his takeover of the facility.

Summer 2027 has been earmarked as the possible return date for commercial flights following the decade-long hiatus.
