Shine A Light Visits Creagh College Following National Inclusion Award

On this week's Shine A Light with Siobhan Murphy, she took a visit to Creagh College in Gorey, which has recently been awarded the prestigious Belong To LGBTQ+ Quality Mark in recognition of its commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.

During the programme, Siobhan met with students and teachers who spoke openly and candidly about what life is like for LGBTQIA+ young people growing up in Ireland today and their experiences within the school community.

A key part of Creagh College's success has been its LGBTQ+ Allies Club, which provides a safe and supportive space where students can connect, share experiences and promote understanding throughout the school. Students described the club as a place where they feel accepted, respected and empowered to be themselves.

Teachers also spoke about the journey towards achieving the Quality Mark, highlighting the positive impact it has had on school culture and the important conversations it has encouraged among students, staff and families.

The award comes at a significant time. Research from Belong To's School Climate Survey found that 76% of LGBTQ+ students in Ireland do not always feel safe at school. However, schools that actively promote inclusion help students feel a stronger sense of belonging and acceptance among their peers.

For Creagh College, the Quality Mark represents much more than an accreditation. It reflects a school community that celebrates diversity, values student voices and works every day to ensure that every young person feels seen, supported and included.
