Three remain in hospital after six males found in shipping container at Rosslare Europort

Three of the six males discovered inside a shipping container at Rosslare Europort remain in Wexford General Hospital.

Emergency services were alerted at around 6am on Thursday after one of those inside the container made a distress call.

Independent Councillor Ger Carthy says there was initially difficulty establishing the caller’s location, but a phone-location system used by the emergency control room identified the call as coming from a vessel travelling to Rosslare.

A response was then coordinated involving port staff, immigration services and the National Ambulance Service.

Six males — five adults and one juvenile — were located inside a container after the vessel docked at Rosslare Europort and were transferred to Wexford General Hospital.

Councillor Carthy says three have since been released from hospital into Garda custody, while three remain under the care of hospital staff.

Gardaí have opened an investigation into the incident.

Rosslare Europort handles hundreds of thousands of trailer movements each year, with Councillor Carthy saying incidents involving people attempting to travel in freight containers continue to arise from time to time.
