The number of vacant commercial premises in County Wexford has increased. Figures released by GeoView show that last year the figure stood at 9 per cent which increased to 9.8 per cent or 706 commercial addresses empty in the first three months of 2014. However when compared with the national average of 12.4 per cent Wexford fares better than a number of other areas across the country. Paid parking has been suggested as one of the reasons for vacant premises in towns across the country. Neil Hughes of Hughes - Blake chartered accountants in Enniscorthy says it's resulting in less people coming into towns to do their shopping. Meanwhile newly elected Chairman of Wexford County Council Fianna Fáil's Malcolm Byrne says there needs to be innovation to bring in new initiatives to encourage shoppers in and therefore help keep businesses open.
