On October 9th the Education & Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) held its annual congress in Cavan with key stakeholders including Minister for Education Helen McEntee and psychotherapist Dr. Richard Hogan addressing major challenges facing the education sector. Minister McEntee highlighted the government's commitment to advancing education by announcing €2 million in funding for the upcoming Convention on Education which aims to involve various groups, including children, parents, educators and the wider community in shaping the future of Ireland’s education system. During the event Dr. Hogan delivered a compelling address calling for a ban on smartphones in schools citing research that shows their negative impact on social interaction among young people. Waterford & Wexford ETB Chief Executive, Dr. Karina Daly, contributed to a panel discussion on strategy and communications with various topics explored including special education, curriculum reform and multi-denominational education. The congress also addressed growing concerns around the Irish language collaboration with local employers and managing the expansion of education services. While the increase in funding for education services is welcomed the sector continues to face challenges related to rising costs and resource pressures.
