Excitement is building as 18 athletes from Wexford Special Olympics Club prepare to represent the county and Leinster at the Special Olympics Ireland Games in Dublin from June 18th to 22nd.
The athletes will compete across a variety of sports, including gymnastics, athletics, swimming and bocce, after months of dedicated training. Nine of the competitors will take part in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, with family and friends recently invited to a special showcase to watch their routines ahead of the Games.
Club volunteers and parents say the Games mark an important milestone, coming eight years after the last national event and following the disruption caused by the pandemic.
The Wexford club supports around 50 athletes from across the county, with many taking part in multiple sports and benefiting from the friendships, confidence and opportunities the organisation provides.
The opening ceremony takes place at Tallaght Stadium on June 18th, with competitions running until June 22nd. Supporters are encouraged to attend and cheer on Team Wexford as they compete on the national stage.
