Wexford Festival Opera celebrates 75 years of music, community and tradition

Wexford Festival Opera is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, marking more than seven decades of opera, music and international talent in the town.

The festival gets underway on October 15th at Ireland’s National Opera House, with a programme of productions marking the milestone anniversary.

Executive Director Suzanne Nance says what has been created in Wexford over the past 75 years is unlike anything she has seen anywhere else in the world.

Reflecting on the origins of the festival, she says its creation in 1950s Ireland was almost unimaginable.Nance says that at a time when Ireland was still dealing with significant social and economic challenges, for Wexford to decide to establish an opera festival was remarkable.

She says the fact that the festival has survived and flourished is a testament to the people of Wexford.Nance also paid tribute to the volunteers who have supported the festival over the decades, saying the continued commitment of the community has helped sustain it.

The festival was founded in 1951 and has since developed an international reputation for its innovative productions and for showcasing emerging opera talent alongside established performers.

As Wexford Festival Opera marks 75 years, this year's programme will celebrate that history while continuing the festival's tradition of bringing opera to audiences in Wexford and beyond.

For Nance, the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the generations of people who have played a part in making the festival what it is today.
