EirGrid, Ireland's electricity grid operator and developer, participated in the Catholic Guides of Ireland South East Region’s Jamboree at Our Lady’s Island in Wexford, aiming to inspire the next generation of engineers. The event brought together over 110 girl guides from across Wexford, including units from Piercestown, Summerhill, Castlebridge and Wexford town to explore topics like renewable energy, biodiversity and orienteering. EirGrid representatives led an interactive session where the Guides built their own wind turbines and learned about the role of engineering, science and technology in maintaining Ireland's national electricity grid. The hands-on experience provided the Guides with a fun and engaging way to explore STEM fields, with a focus on renewable energy and sustainable practices. Rachel Berney, Senior Project Support Specialist at EirGrid and Unit Leader in Barntown Girl Guides, praised the enthusiasm of the participants, highlighting how the event helped the girls build new skills, boost confidence and spark interest in potential future careers in STEM. Alongside EirGrid’s workshop, the Guides also enjoyed activities like making bee hotels, leaf chromatography and compass games, further fostering their creativity and teamwork. The event was a great success in encouraging young girls to consider STEM subjects for both personal growth and future career possibilities.
