This week, three exceptional Wexford music groups had the incredible opportunity to perform in the heart of Irish politics, at Leinster House—the very halls where history is made. It was a night to remember as the Kiltra School of Music, Blazing Sky Choir and Cumas New Ross Band took center stage. The special invitation to perform came from Wexford TD & Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy who invited the groups for the official switch on of the Christmas Lights. A status Orange Weather Warning did not dampen the spirits as all groups arrived safe and sound to Leinster House where the evenings events scheduled to take place on the lawn were moved inside the main building by the Christmas Tree. Angela and Robert Mahon from Kiltra School of Music were overjoyed by the invitation. "It’s a privilege to perform here, especially for such an influential audience,” said Robert. "It’s not every day you get to perform in the chambers of the Dáil. We’re just a small rural group, but the opportunity means the world to us." The school brought along a mix of performers, from youth to adults, showcasing the range of musical talent nurtured in the heart of Wexford. Another highlight of the evening was Blazing Sky Choir, led by composer and conductor Liam Bates. The choir’s rendition of the powerful piece "Blazing Sky" had special significance. Inspired by the image of a baby lying not in a manger, but amidst rubble, the song aims to raise awareness of global conflict and its impact on children. "To bring this song to Leinster House means a lot to us," said Liam. "It’s been heard around the world and today we had the chance to share its message with the decision-makers who have the power to make change." Another standout performance came from the Cumas New Ross Band, a talented group of musicians who represent Cumas Day Services, which empowers people with disabilities to live independent lives through music. Service Manager Pam Miley expressed her pride in the group’s achievement. “This is such a great opportunity for our musicians. They’ve worked hard, practicing for hours and now they’re being recognized for their dedication and talent.” The band’s performance was met with warm applause from the Taoiseach and Tánaiste, who both took the time afterwards to speak with all of the band members after the show. From the youngest performers to the most seasoned musicians, the night at Leinster House showed what makes Wexford truly special—a place where creativity, passion and pride shine through in every note and every performance. As these local groups returned home with their hearts full, they leave behind a lasting reminder that music has the power to bridge communities and touch the hearts of those who hear it—no matter where they are. For Wexford, this was a moment to be proud of, a moment to share our unique spirit, talent & passion with the entire nation. Listen back here :
