The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is urging people across Wexford & the country to make blood donation a New Year’s resolution for 2026. With blood supplies critically low particularly for the A, B and O negative blood types the IBTS is calling on donors to help boost stocks and save lives. Paul McKinney, Director of Donor Services and Logistics at IBTS, explained, "We currently need all blood groups, but A, B, and O negative are especially in demand. Our stocks for these blood types are dangerously low, with only around a three-day supply available at the moment." This shortage has been exacerbated by higher-than-usual donor cancellations due to seasonal illnesses, holiday disruptions, and poor weather conditions. Additionally, there has been an increase in the demand for blood from hospitals, affecting the IBTS's ability to collect enough of the right blood types. The IBTS is asking all eligible blood donors to keep their appointments if they are healthy and well. For those who have not yet scheduled an appointment, now is the time to act. Donors can easily book an appointment by calling 1800 731 137 or visiting the IBTS website at giveblood.ie (https://www.giveblood.ie) . "Many blood donors who haven't donated in a while are encouraged to consider making blood donation their New Year’s resolution," said Mr. McKinney. "Donating blood not only saves lives, but it’s also a simple way to make a real difference in the community." In December 2025 alone, hospitals ordered more O negative blood than expected, with over 1700 units of this blood type accounting for 17.2% of all blood issued. O negative is the universal blood type and is in particularly high demand for emergencies and surgeries. - Blood lasts just 35 days in storage, meaning a constant supply is needed. - Only 3% of the eligible population donates blood, but donations are essential for maintaining a healthy national blood supply. - Donors can give blood every 90 days , helping to ensure stocks are replenished regularly. The IBTS reminds the public that blood donation is a critical and lifesaving act, especially during times of high demand. Donating blood not only supports hospitals but also helps to save thousands of lives each year. Clinic Details There are clinics in Enniscorthy from January 25th
