Wexford Road Safety Campaign Leads to 52 Arrests for Drink and Drug Driving

Wexford Gardaí have arrested 52 drivers for suspected drink and drug driving offences as part of the National Christmas Road Safety Campaign which ran from December 1st to January 5th. This marks a troubling rise in arrests compared to previous years. During the campaign period, 27 arrests were for alcohol-related offenses, while 25 were for drug driving, including arrests for substances such as cocaine and cannabis. One driver was found to be under the influence of all four drugs tested at roadside checkpoints. The majority of offenders were males under 50 years of age, with females under 25 making up a smaller proportion of those arrested. Sergeant Aisling Ferriter gave the startling stats today on Morning Mix and she stressed the importance of education alongside enforcement, emphasizing that driving under the influence not only endangers the driver but also innocent road users. In comparison to previous years, the arrests this year have shown an increase in both drink and drug driving offenses in Wexford. The 52 arrests in this campaign are up from 44 arrests last year and 22 arrests in 2022 . Listen back here to the full interview with Sergeant Ferriter:
