New Garda road safety figures show more motorists are being caught breaking traffic laws across Ireland, with Wexford among the areas seeing significant changes in enforcement activity.
Nationally, detections for speeding, mobile phone use and seatbelt offences all increased in 2025, bringing road offence fines to their highest post-pandemic level.
For motorists in the Wexford–Wicklow Garda division, one of the most notable increases was in seatbelt detections, which rose sharply compared to previous years.
At the same time, roadside breath testing in Wexford–Wicklow dropped by 21 per cent – one of the largest regional decreases recorded nationally.
The Independent reports that across Ireland, speeding detections increased by 23 per cent, with almost 169,000 motorists caught exceeding limits last year. The figures also show road fatalities rose by 7 per cent to 183 deaths – the highest annual total in the last decade.
Despite fewer breath tests overall, Gardaí say detections for drink and drug driving increased, with more than 8,000 motorists arrested for driving under the influence during the year.
Gardaí say roadside checkpoints remain only one part of their road policing strategy and that targeted operations and intelligence-led enforcement will continue to focus on dangerous driving behaviour.
