A woman died at Kilpatrick Beach in Castletown, north County Wexford, earlier this afternoon (Friday).
The woman, who is believed to have been in her 60s, died at around 2.30pm. She is understood to have been a tourist visiting the area.
Independent Councillor Joe Sullivan spoke to South East Radio News from the scene this evening.
He said: "A woman was seen in difficulty in the water, very close to the shore, less than 5 metres from the shore. She was taken out and emergency services attended. The Coast Guard, the National Ambulance Service, the Gardaí and all medical assistance was rendered at the scene, but unfortunately she passed away."
