Shine A Light More Than A Miscarriage

Shine A Light with Siobhán Murphy

Tuesday, 6 October 2026 - 52 minutes

Pregnancy loss is far more common than many people realise, yet for countless women and families it remains one of the most difficult forms of grief to talk about.

In this episode of Shine a Light, Siobhán Murphy explores the reality of miscarriage and baby loss, the emotional and physical impact it can have, and why campaigners believe much more needs to change when it comes to support, understanding and workplace leave.

Broadcaster and presenter Anna Daly speaks openly about experiencing two miscarriages and about returning to work just days after her second loss. She explains why she is now supporting calls for dedicated paid miscarriage leave and why, for her, recognition of the loss is every bit as important as the number of days provided.

Wexford woman Kelly Comerford also shares her deeply personal story. Kelly speaks about an earlier miscarriage, the lack of support she experienced at the time, and the later loss of her baby son John following an extremely premature birth. She talks about grief, counselling, the importance of acknowledging a baby who has died, and why women need time and space to recover both physically and emotionally.

The programme also hears from Nina of Féileacáin, the national organisation supporting families affected by pregnancy and baby loss. She outlines the help available to bereaved parents and wider family members, including support meetings, memory boxes, sibling supports and cuddle cots, while reminding listeners that grief has no timetable and support is available even many years after a loss.

With October marking Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, this is an honest and important conversation about grief, silence, support and the changes many families believe are still needed.
