Derek Kent has shared his excitement following a remarkable weekend for hurling in the county, with both St. Martin’s and Davidstown Courtnacuddy securing Leinster titles in their respective senior and junior categories.
The Leinster Chair was speaking earlier on Morning Mix with Alan Corcoran and he said the wins have given a great boost to Wexford hurling. He paid tribute to the dedication of the teams and the tremendous support they received.
Kent praised St. Martin’s for their impressive performance, particularly their victory over Ballyhale Shamrocks, calling it a great advertisement for the sport.
He also commended Davidstown Courtnacuddy for their hard-fought win, emphasizing the importance of clubs like Davidstown in keeping rural GAA alive and thriving.
Looking ahead, Kent suggested that Wexford’s hurling championships need restructuring to make them more competitive.
He proposed a championship format where every game has jeopardy with no easy matches and relegation spots at stake.
Kent believes such changes would raise the level of play and better prepare the county’s teams for the inter-county competitions.
As Wexford GAA heads into the festive season and the 2026 season, Kent is optimistic about the county’s chances in both hurling and football, despite the challenges posed by tough teams like Louth in football and the competitive hurling landscape.
He also acknowledged the temptation for players to travel, which could affect team commitments, but emphasized the importance of players’ dedication to both their clubs and county.
