National Tree Week, Ireland’s biggest annual celebration of trees and forests, is being marked across County Wexford with community planting events and the distribution of native saplings.
An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Joe Sullivan, presented trees to members of the Castletown Development Group on Friday, March 13th as part of the celebrations.
Organised each year by the Tree Council of Ireland in partnership with Coillte, National Tree Week encourages communities to appreciate and protect Ireland’s trees while promoting environmental awareness.
This year’s theme, “Growing a Greener Future Together,” highlights the role communities, organisations, and individuals play in building a more sustainable Ireland.
Councillor Sullivan encouraged people across the county to take part by planting trees and recognising their importance to the environment and local communities.
2026 also marks the 40th anniversary of National Tree Week, celebrating four decades of tree planting and environmental action.
To mark the occasion, Wexford County Council, working with the Tree Council of Ireland and Coillte, distributed 800 native saplings to primary schools across the county.
The council also continues to support local groups through its Trees for Wexford Scheme, which saw 9,669 trees and saplings distributed to community groups and schools earlier this year.
