Wexford’s Fiona Brauneisen selected for Ireland squad ahead of 2026 Tag World Cup

A Wexford woman has been selected to represent Ireland at the 2026 International Tag Federation (ITF) Tag World Cup in Australia.

Ballycogley native Fiona Brauneisen has been named in the Ireland Women’s Senior and 27’s squad for the tournament, which takes place in Coffs Harbour from 15–18 October 2026.

More than 200 teams from over 30 countries are expected to compete across multiple divisions, with Ireland recognised as one of the leading nations in international tag rugby.

Fiona, who works as a Health Promotion Officer, said it is an “absolute honour” to represent Ireland on the world stage, describing the opportunity to compete in Australia — considered the home of tag rugby — as a major challenge and privilege.

Originally from Ballycogley, she attended Loreto Secondary School in Wexford and also represented St Fintan’s GAA Club, developing her sporting career through local and national competition.

Her selection is being celebrated locally, with her journey reflecting the strong grassroots sporting culture in Wexford.

The ITF Tag World Cup will bring together teams from across the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, France, South Africa, Fiji and many more.

Ireland’s tag rugby programme continues to grow, with more than 15,000 players participating nationwide through the Irish Tag Rugby Association.

The announcement comes ahead of Ireland hosting Great Britain in the British & Irish Cup in Dublin this August, ahead of the World Cup in Australia later this year.
