Age & Opportunity has allocated €12,520 in grants to support physical activity initiatives for 45 groups in Wexford. The funding, part of the Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme, aims to encourage older people to stay active through a variety of sports and activities.
This year, the scheme will distribute €300,000 across over 1,000 clubs and organisations nationwide, benefitting more than 34,000 older people. Activities funded include pickleball, walking, cycling, yoga, and walking football, among others. The grants will help purchase sports equipment and fund community events.
Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan TD, highlighted the importance of staying active for physical and mental well-being, with the government aiming for 50% participation in sports by 2027.
Age & Opportunity’s Active Programme Manager, Sue Guildea, praised the response to the scheme, noting increased participation, especially among Men’s and Women’s Sheds, as well as family carers. A third of this year’s funding targets areas of disadvantage, with 60% focused on active retirement and older adult groups.
