Minister James Browne has addressed the recent fuel protests this morning with Alan Corcoran on the Morning Mix. The Minister believes that the government’s response has been both swift and substantial.
He acknowledged the public’s frustration with rising fuel prices saying that the global situation—particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East—has driven volatility in oil markets, which is beyond Ireland's control.
The government, according to Browne, acted quickly by introducing a €505 million support package, one of the largest per capita interventions in the European Union. This, he said, was designed to alleviate the pain of rising costs for ordinary people, including farmers and contractors, who rely heavily on fuel.
However, Browne drew a distinction between peaceful protest and disruptive blockades. He stated that while protests are a constitutional right, blockades—such as those at ports—endanger public safety and essential services. He said that these actions risked health and safety, citing the potential shortages of vital supplies like chemicals for clean water and fuel for emergency services.
On the issue of charity and foreign aid, Browne explained that while Ireland provides assistance to Ukraine, this has not affected the government’s ability to support its own citizens. He stressed that Ireland's approach to the situation is balanced and sustainable, aiming to minimize the long-term damage to the economy while supporting those most affected.
