Baby seal rescued from Curracloe Beach receives care at Seal Rescue Ireland

A tiny baby seal rescued from Curracloe Beach is now receiving care at Seal Rescue Ireland.

The male grey seal pup was discovered by Wexford locals while they were out walking and swimming at the beach yesterday.They spotted members of Seal Rescue Ireland with a box nearby and noticed the tiny pup in difficulty.

The group helped get the seal safely to the rescue team’s car, before he was brought to the seal sanctuary for assessment and treatment.The pup has now been identified as Q-016 and weighs 13 kilograms - a normal weight for his age.

Seal Rescue Ireland estimates he is just one to three days old, based on the condition of his umbilical cord, which is still soft.He has some swelling to his face and scrapes around his eyes, which are believed to have been caused by hitting rocks.He is now receiving wound care, pain relief and antibiotics and is described as being in the best possible hands.

The rescue has attracted huge interest online, with the video of the rescue receiving more than 25,000 views.Seal Rescue Ireland is reminding people that if they come across a seal on the beach, they should keep their distance, ideally at least 100 metres, and keep dogs on leads.Anyone concerned about a seal should contact Seal Rescue Ireland for advice rather than approaching or attempting to rescue it themselves.

For now, it’s hoped Q-016 will make a full recovery.
