Calls for investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of four babies at a hospital
The Health Minister James Reilly has requested a report into the deaths of four babies at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise. A TV documentary last night revealed the infants died shortly after birth over a six year period. They were not suffering from any abnormalities during the onset of labour. The HSE has apologised for shortcomings in the cases and the National Director of Acute Hospitals will arrange to meet the families. Meanwhile, Patient Focus is calling for a wide ranging investigation into the maternity care at the unit.
