Community Rallies to Help 90-Year-Old Former Nurse Stay in the Home She Loves

A Wexford family is appealing for public support to help 90-year-old former nurse Maureen Nagy remain on her property in Marshalstown while urgent repairs are carried out to her home, which has been declared unsafe.

Speaking on Morning Mix, Maureen's grandson's wife and full-time carer, Kaylee Nagy, shared the remarkable story of a woman who spent decades caring for others before returning to Ireland to enjoy her retirement.

Born in Caim in 1936, Maureen lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her aunt. She later moved to England after answering an advertisement for nurses, where she worked for more than 30 years. It was there she met her Hungarian husband, Michael Nagy, and together they raised two daughters before returning to Ireland in 1989 and settling in Marshalstown.

Following the death of her daughter Gizella five years ago, Maureen's grandson Adam and his wife Kaylee became her primary carers. Alongside working full-time, they care for Maureen with support from HSE home care services and Woodbrook Care.

However, the family's greatest challenge is now Maureen's home. The more than 100-year-old house has deteriorated badly, with collapsed ceilings, a leaking and unstable chimney, severe damp, rotten timber, leaking roofs, faulty electrics and crumbling walls. Builders and electricians have advised that the property is no longer safe to live in.

The family is working with Cathal Byrne's office and ALONE to secure grants and other supports, but in the meantime they have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money for a mobile home. This would allow Maureen to remain on her own property, close to her beloved dog and familiar surroundings, while essential repair work is completed.

Kaylee said the family's goal is simple: to give Maureen a safe place to live without forcing her to leave the community and home she has loved for so many years.
