The announced closure of the ProAmpac packaging plant in Carnew has been described as a devastating blow for its employees, their families and the wider community.
Approximately 30 people are employed at the facility, which has operated in the town for around 35 years and was previously known as Irish Flexible Packaging.
The company became part of the US-based ProAmpac group following its acquisition in 2021.
Wicklow-Wexford Sinn Féin TD Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin broke the news this morning on South East Radio and he has called for urgent engagement between the company, government and state employment agencies to determine what support can be provided to the affected workforce.
He said the loss of the plant would not be felt by employees alone warning of a knock-on impact on local shops, services and other businesses.
Deputy Ó Súilleabháin said every possibility of protecting employment at the site should be examined. If the closure cannot be prevented, he said workers must receive comprehensive redundancy, retraining and employment supports.
The announcement has also prompted wider concerns about the future of manufacturing employment in rural towns and the difficulty of replacing established local industries.
North Wexford TD Malcolm Byrne in a statement to South East Radio news said
“For a small and vibrant community such as Carnew, the loss of 39 jobs will have a huge impact. It is critical that the company support these workers for their loyal service in terms of adequate redundancy and with training and upskilling opportunities so that they can take on new employment.”
