Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has defended President Michael D Higgins for his comments following the death of Fidel Castro in Cuba.
Yesterday President Higgins released a statement expressing his personal sadness at the death of the Cuban leader, and described Castro as a giant among global leaders who fought for freedom. Cuba is observing nine days of mourning in the country, while Cuban-Americans in Miami have been celebrating with street parties. Deputy Martin says it is normal for the President to release a statement following the death of another world leader.
