Further calls for people to use 1 and 2 cent coins
There's been a call by the Central bank for people to recirculate one and two cent coins. The coins cost more to mint than the actual value of them, as the Central Bank claims millions of them are lying lost and abandoned in homes around the country. A rounding trial carried out in Wexford town last year found that 85 per cent of consumers and 100 per cent of retailers would like to see the coins done away with and prices rounded to the nearest five cent. On foot of this the Minister for Finance is believed to be considering proposals to drop the one and two cent coins from circulation.
