Gorey mother urges people to listen to their bodies after rare cancer diagnosis

A Gorey mother battling a rare form of cancer is urging people to listen to their bodies and get unusual symptoms checked.

Annie Comerford was diagnosed with sarcoma after experiencing pain in her side and months of bloating.

A scan revealed a mass in her abdomen with further tests confirming a rare sarcoma.

Annie has since undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is now receiving targeted therapy at home.

The treatment has affected her energy levels making it difficult to do many of the everyday things she once took for granted while caring for her young son Elijah.

Annie is also researching possible treatments abroad including in Germany and a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help with potential costs.

She says the response from the Gorey and wider Wexford community has been overwhelming.

Annie is now using her experience to raise awareness of sarcoma and encourage people not to ignore changes in their bodies.

She says: “I would just say to people to really try to know your body and understand your symptoms, what's normal, and then if anything a little bit abnormal, there's nothing wrong with going to get it checked.”

Annie also thanked the local community for the support she and her family have received since her diagnosis, saying she has been “blown away” by people's generosity.

She says her message is simple — don't be afraid to trust your instincts and speak to your doctor if something doesn't feel right
