A preschool in Gorey has made history by becoming the first Irish-speaking early years service in Ireland to achieve School of Sanctuary status.
Naíonra na Síolta Óga has been recognised for its commitment to creating a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment for all children and families, particularly those seeking sanctuary and protection.
The prestigious designation was officially confirmed on June 18 during the preschool’s graduation ceremony, when members of the Schools of Sanctuary monitoring team visited the service and witnessed its ethos of inclusion and belonging in action.
Staff say the award reflects their commitment to ensuring every child feels valued and supported from the beginning of their educational journey.
Áine Quinn, School of Sanctuary Champion for Naíonra na Síolta Óga, said the recognition sends a clear message to families arriving in the community during difficult times that they will receive a genuine welcome.
She said the naíonra strives to provide a place where children are safe, cherished and celebrated, adding that the Irish language can be a bridge to belonging rather than a barrier.
The preschool recently celebrated its journey with an intergenerational community event, bringing together local schools, Oakfield Nursing Home and community groups to promote friendship, inclusion and connection across generations.
Schools of Sanctuary Ireland also praised the achievement, highlighting that Gorey now has four Champion Schools of Sanctuary, along with several Member and Friend Schools, making it a leader in the national initiative.
Tiffy Allen, Schools of Sanctuary Ireland's South East Coordinator, said the organisation had been deeply impressed by the naíonra’s commitment to welcome and inclusion, as well as its strong collaboration with neighbouring schools and the wider community.
Naíonra na Síolta Óga says it hopes to continue building a culture of kindness, safety and inclusion, ensuring every child has the opportunity to belong and thrive.
