Hospital 'VIP Days' Help Wexford Girl Katie on the Road to Recovery

A special initiative funded by the Children’s Health Foundation is brightening the lives of children enduring long hospital stays, including nine-year-old Katie Whitty from Wexford.

The “VIP (Very Important Patient) Days” at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Temple Street provide personalised celebrations for children undergoing extended treatments. These days bring fun, comfort, and normality into hospital life. Thanks to generous donations across Ireland, the initiative has been a source of joy for many, including Katie, who created her own “Boss Day” during her stay.

The idea for VIP Days began when a young patient from Donegal, struggling with homesickness, was given a morale-boosting day filled with games and treats. The success of this “Donegal Day” inspired the creation of more tailored celebrations, from princess parties to superhero adventures, bringing joy to children facing difficult times.

Katie's journey has been challenging. After a serious car accident in 2023, she spent over four months recovering at CHI Temple Street. Her mother, Melissa, recalls how Nurse Manager Susan and the team organised Katie’s special day, allowing her to be the “boss” and choose food and activities. “It was the first time since the accident that I saw my daughter as she had been before,” Melissa says.

Now three years later, Katie is thriving and full of life, with a personality that shines. Nurse Manager Susan notes the importance of the VIP Day initiative, saying that it’s made possible by the support of Children’s Health Foundation donors. “Each VIP Day brings joy and comfort at a time when children need it most,” she says.

Currently, VIP Days are available on one ward, with plans to expand. A €2,000 donation can fund a full year of VIP Days for a ward, bringing smiles to more children across Ireland.
