HSE Winter Vaccination Programme Gets Underway In Wexford

The HSE’s 2026-2027 winter vaccination programme is now underway in County Wexford, with flu and COVID-19 vaccines available to those most at risk of serious illness.

People aged 60 and over, those with certain medical conditions or weakened immune systems are being advised to get both vaccines this winter. Flu vaccination is also recommended for healthcare workers, pregnant women and children aged between two and 17.

An enhanced flu vaccine is available for people aged 65 and over, while children aged two to 17 can receive the free nasal flu vaccine through participating GPs and pharmacies. Some children will also be offered vaccination through their schools.

The HSE says flu caused significant illness last winter, with 25,000 confirmed cases recorded nationally. Almost 6,000 people required hospital treatment, including 185 admissions to intensive care, while more than 300 people with confirmed flu died.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are free for those who are eligible and can be administered during the same appointment. Vaccines are being provided through participating GP practices and pharmacies.

HSE vaccination teams will also visit nursing homes and other residential care settings, as well as providing vaccination for people who are housebound. Dedicated flu clinics will be available for healthcare workers.

Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health with HSE Dublin and South East, is encouraging those who are eligible to get vaccinated.

She says flu and COVID-19 remain a significant health concern, particularly for older people and those living with underlying health conditions, and that vaccination can help protect individuals as well as those around them during the winter months.
