Revenue officers have seized more than 9.3 million cigarettes with an estimated value of over €8.8 million at Rosslare Europort in County Wexford.
The seizure took place on Tuesday, October 6th, following routine risk profiling operations aimed at detecting tobacco products that could potentially enter the market without the appropriate taxes being paid.
Approximately 9,360,000 cigarettes were discovered in an accompanied trailer that had arrived at Rosslare Europort on a ferry from France.
The cigarettes, branded Sovereign and Super Kings, have an estimated retail value exceeding €8.8 million and represent a potential loss of almost €7 million to the Exchequer.
Both the trailer and its contents were seized by Revenue officers.
A man in his 30s was questioned in connection with the discovery.
Revenue has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that no further information is available at this stage.
The seizure forms part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the illegal supply and sale of tobacco products.
Revenue is appealing to businesses and members of the public who may have information about smuggling activities to contact them confidentially on the freephone number 1800 295 295.
