Kilmore Quay RNLI Responds to Motorboat in Difficulty Near Saltee Islands

Kilmore Quay RNLI volunteers were called into action this week after a motorboat carrying five people suffered engine failure off the Wexford coast.

The volunteer crew launched on Monday afternoon following a request from the Irish Coast Guard to assist the occupants of an eight-metre vessel which had become stranded near the Saltee Islands in difficult visibility conditions.

The all-weather Tamar class lifeboat RNLB Killarney launched at 2.43pm under Coxswain Aidan Bates with a crew of five on board and made its way to the scene. Dense fog had settled across the area, reducing visibility, although sea conditions were described as slight.

Arriving at the vessel shortly after 3pm, the RNLI crew first ensured that everyone on board was safe and well before carrying out an assessment of the situation. Given the conditions and the boat’s location, the decision was made that the safest option was to establish a tow and bring the disabled craft back to shore.

The lifeboat escorted the vessel to Kilmore Quay, arriving safely at the pontoon before 4pm. Following completion of the operation, the RNLI crew returned to the station and prepared the lifeboat for future callouts.

Kilmore Quay RNLI has reminded the public that while the lifeboat and crew are often the most visible part of the organisation’s work, there are many ways people can support lifesaving services locally.

The station is currently recruiting for a volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager — a shore-based leadership role supporting the existing team and helping ensure the station remains operational and ready to respond when needed. Further information is available through the RNLI website, station social media channels or by contacting the station directly.
