Lower Speed Limit On The Way For Tagoat Village

Plans to reduce the speed limits around Tagoat have been welcomed this week.

A report on a Road Safety Scheme for the village was presented to the Rosslare Municipal District councillors yesterday.

It found the N25 in the area needs to be narrowed as 63 per cent of cars that used the road in July 2023 were speeding.

The design of the scheme is underway with hopes construction will begin in October and last around 6 months.

Councillor Jim Codd is welcoming the news and says it's not before time.

"Whatever we can do to control the speed, we have to control it.

"This analysis was carried out in 2023, it's now July 2026 so we need to speed up with this."

The proposals would see the speed limit on the N25 drop to 50kmph in the village.

Councillors were told the collision rate in the area is twice the expected average due to a large amount of speeding on the route.

The road is very popular among truck and trailer drivers heading to Rosslare Europort with HGVs making up to 15 per cent of the traffic in the area.

A landscaping plan is also on the way while a toucan crossing will also be introduced to help pedestrians cross the road.

This will be added to by pedestrian and cycling infrastructure on both sides of the road.

While the plan still has to go through the detailed design process, it's hoped the project will go for public procurement in September with the construction to be finished in the middle of next year.

Councillor Codd says the people of the area can't wait much longer:

"The turnoffs there are lethal and Tagoat right now is a very dangerous place to live in. We'd want to see these works finished sooner rather than later.

That report was funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme.
