A Carlow councillor believes the time has come to examine the possibility of a motorway linking the Midlands and South Leinster with Rosslare Europort.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Andrea Dalton raised the idea following this week's meeting of Carlow County Council, arguing that Rosslare's growing strategic importance makes the case for improved road infrastructure.
Speaking to South East Radio News this afternoon, Cllr Dalton said the proposal is at an early stage but believes it is a conversation worth having.
With more than 10,000 vehicle movements on the N80 each day, she said the road is already under significant pressure, while Rosslare Europort's designation as a Port of National Significance and its expanding role in post-Brexit trade and offshore renewable energy will only increase demand on the transport network.
Cllr Dalton said a future motorway linking Rosslare Europort with the M7, M9 and M6 would benefit far more than the South East.
"It wouldn't only benefit the local area, it would benefit probably more than half of Ireland," she said, adding that a high-quality connection would support businesses along the route by reducing freight journey times, lowering transport costs and improving supply chains.
While no formal proposal has been put forward, Cllr Dalton said she wants the option to be explored now so Ireland is better prepared for future growth in freight and trade through Rosslare Europort. She also suggested the project could be eligible for European funding because of the port's national significance.
