A 31-year-old man has been jailed for six months following a three-vehicle crash in County Wexford that led to the loss of an unborn baby.
Yurii Dudek had pleaded guilty to careless driving causing serious bodily harm in relation to the collision on the N25 at Drinagh in January 2024.
Saoirse Aylward, who was 31 weeks pregnant at the time, underwent an emergency C-section after the crash.
Her son, Jax, was stillborn.
At Wexford Circuit Court, Judge Cormac Quinn described the victims’ impact statements as deeply distressing but said a custodial sentence was inevitable.
Ms Aylward has now launched a campaign for legislative reform, calling for unborn babies who die in road collisions to be recognised as separate victims under Irish law.
