Motion to criticise government over irish water defeated

The government has defeated a Fianna Fáil motion criticising its handling of the establishment of Irish Water. The Dáil voted by 71 votes to 51 to support the setting up of the utility. Earlier the opposition had also criticised the government failure to scrutinise spending on consultancy by Irish Water. And that led Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore to hit out at Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin for spending on consultants when he was a Minister. "Meanwhile your government presided over a neglect of water services of this country, to the point where the people of Galway couldn't drink the water because it was contaminated - you brushed it under the carpet" he said. "For the money you wasted, Deputy Martin on consultants reports, you'd have established Irish Water three times over" he added.
