A New Ross Councillor says rising costs could put us at risk of going back into a recession.
Michael Sheehan's comments come as a package of measures being prepared by the Government to help with high fuel prices will include supports for hauliers, according to the Transport Minister. Darragh O’Brien met with the Irish Road Haulage Association today, over its call for supports to manage rising costs at the petrol pumps.
The organisation say if changes aren't implemented by Tuesday, it will initiate road blockages around the country.
Meanwhile speaking on Morning Mix earlier New Ross Councillor Michael Sheehan called for action as fuel prices continue to soar. "Driving down to County Hall yesterday, I passed a petrol station where diesel was 209. When I came back at lunchtime, it had jumped to 217. In just a few hours, it went up. Those numbers are only going in one direction. That's why I've been in contact with the government. We need action now. We need to get ahead of this." He added "The government needs to understand how detrimental this will be to people's lives, households, and the economy, because this has the risk of pushing us back into recession."
Elsewhere, the Tanaiste says the measures the government adopt will be for a short time and will be implemented quickly. He's talked down the prospect of there being energy credits for households.
