Winter 2025/26 was particularly wet for Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford, which recorded its wettest winter since 2016, with 509.1 mm of rain – 174% of the long-term average.
The heaviest daily rainfall occurred on 14th December, with 51.1 mm falling in just one day.
This exceptional rainfall is part of a broader trend seen across the Midlands, South, and East, where a south-shifted jet stream brought repeated frontal rainbands from the southwest.
The wet conditions at Johnstown Castle are among the highest recorded in the area over the past 84 years, showcasing the impact of extreme weather during the season.
