Wexford is set to benefit from up to €70 million in housing infrastructure funding as part of a major Government investment aimed at unlocking land for new homes.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD has announced that five projects across Enniscorthy, Gorey and Wexford town will receive support through the first phase of the €1 billion Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF).
The projects being funded include:
-
Turret Rocks Link Road – €4 million
-
Ballynagee Link Road – over €10 million
-
Milehouse to Moyne Link Road – €20 million
-
St Waleran’s Strategic Transport Link – over €10 million
-
Ballytegan Safety Works – under €10 million
The investment is aimed at providing key infrastructure needed to unlock housing development and allow more homes to be delivered across the county.
The HIIF is being administered by the new Housing Activation Office within the Department of Housing and is designed to support infrastructure projects that can help bring zoned land into use.
Announcing the funding on Morning Mix earlier this morning, Minister Browne said the projects were selected because they are ready to progress quickly.
He said: “All of these projects should be getting the shovels in the ground very quickly. I insisted that projects would only be funded that are shovel-ready, that we can get moving on quickly, that will unlock a significant amount of housing and also deliver for the local communities as well.”
Minister Browne said the investment represents up to €70 million for County Wexford under the fund and could help unlock up to 5,000 homes over the coming years, with further housing delivery expected indirectly.
He added that the funding was “a really important day for County Wexford” and said further applications for support are expected as the programme continues.
The Department says the Housing Activation Office will work with local authorities and key agencies, including Uisce Éireann and ESB Networks, to ensure the necessary services are in place to support housing development.
A further call for applications under the HIIF programme is expected later this year, with the Department planning to expand the scheme to include additional public and private sector partners.
