Report into allegations of garda misconduct to be published today
The damning report that caused the resignation of Alan Shatter from the Government will be published later. The 300-page Guerin report will outline how the Garda Ombudsman, Department of Justice and Minister for Justice failed to investigate allegations of Garda misconduct. A dossier of allegations of Gardai failing to properly investigate a series of crimes was given by Garda Sergeant Maurice McCabe to the Fianna Fáil leader. Micheál Martin passed them to the Taoiseach and Enda Kenny asked Senior Counsel Seán Guerin to investigate the claims. His 300 page report was delivered to the Taoiseach on Tuesday night and the following day, three chapters of it were enough to force Alan Shatter's resignation. The report deals with a series of of allegations including the handling of an offendant who was on bail for offences when he murdered Slyvia Roche Kelly. The report has been redacted to remove some names and information around court cases but will be published by the Government today - the coalition will also announce it's setting up a commission of investigation off the back of the report.
