Teacher Aileen Sutherland and students Rhys, Noah and Mya from Scoil Mhuire Coolcotts joined us to talk about their upcoming production of Disney’s Newsies Jr, which will take place in the school hall from May 27th to 29th at 7.30pm nightly.
The annual sixth class production has become a major highlight for the school community, with students putting huge effort into rehearsals in recent weeks. Despite many pupils not having access to private dance or drama lessons, the talent and confidence being shown on stage has impressed teachers and families alike.
As an urban DEIS school, Scoil Mhuire Coolcotts says the production is providing students with far more than just a performance opportunity. Teachers say taking part in the show is helping pupils improve confidence, teamwork and literacy skills, as students work hard learning scripts, songs and choreography.
The school also believes the experience is having a positive impact on student engagement and attendance at a time of year when attendance can often dip for sixth class students preparing to move on to secondary school.
Students Rhys, Noah and Mya spoke about the excitement of performing in front of an audience and the friendships and memories being created through the show.
