Sick workers costing businesses almost 500 million euro a year
Absenteeism is costing small business nearly 500 million euro every year. The Small Firms Association says that last year more than 4 million days were lost to sickness. Their research shows that people in small companies are less likely to take a sickie, compared to those in larger businesses. Alan Sherlock from the SFA says they want to help firms tackle the issue. "Look at simple measures that you can take to try mitigate those exact things...those sickies" he said. "This really is all about reducing the abuse - so presenting people from making the choice of coming to work". "If you're really sick, there's no such thing as a choice - you're not going to come to work". "We're not suggesting for a moment that unwell people should show up to work; it's a bad idea for them, it's a bad idea for the people around them". "What we're talking about really is just working on those things where people ahve made a choice about their attendance on a give day" he added.
