South East Radio joins major national road safety campaign

South East Radio is joining 20 independent radio stations across Ireland in a major new initiative aimed at increasing road safety awareness and helping to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads.

More than 1,200 programmes and features are set to be broadcast across the participating stations over the next year making it one of the largest coordinated road safety broadcasting initiatives undertaken by Ireland’s independent radio sector.

Latest Garda figures show that 133 people have died on Irish roads so far in 2026, compared with 120 during the same period last year.

South East Radio will create and broadcast its own locally relevant road safety content as part of the project with programming tailored specifically to listeners across the South East.

The initiative will include more than 100 documentary and discussion programmes, along with approximately 1,100 shorter features.

Content will include interviews and first-hand testimony from people who investigate road collisions, emergency personnel who attend serious and fatal incidents, victims and families affected by collisions, along with contributions from An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and local authorities.

The campaign is particularly focused on reaching motorists, with figures showing that 41% of radio listening in Ireland takes place in vehicles.

Michael Kelly, Chief Executive of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, said the initiative would give listeners across the country greater awareness and knowledge of road safety and the measures they can take to protect themselves and others.

He said the project demonstrates independent stations playing their part in the urgent effort to reduce road deaths and serious injuries.

The 21 participating stations include South East Radio, KCLR96FM, WLR, Tipp FM, C103, Clare FM, Galway Bay FM, Highland Radio, Midlands 103, Midwest Radio, Ocean FM and a number of other independent broadcasters around the country.

The initiative is supported through the News Reporting Scheme, which funds public-interest journalism through Coimisiún na Meán and the Exchequer
