State admits liability for death of wexford air corps cadet

The State has admitted liability for the death of a County Wexford Aer Corps cadet who was killed in a plane crash in 2009. Cadet David Jevens was on a training flight when the plane crashed near Cornamona in Co Galway in October 2009 killing him and his trainer. The family of Cdt Jevens had taken a civil case against the State, the Minister for Defence and the Attorney General. Galway Circuit Civil court heard this morning the action had been settled. Barrister John Kiely told Judge Ray Fullam this morning that the State was consenting to judgment and accepting full liability. Mr Kiely read a statement to the court on behalf of Minister for Defence Alan Shatter in which the minister wished to reassure his family that he was "not remotely to blame" for the tragedy and he expressed his sincere regret to them. Afterwards, the cadet's parents, Donal and Liz Jevens, welcomed the settlement. Mrs Jevens said her son had been vindicated by the State's acceptance of liability. She said she was happy the minister had issued a statement saying there was no blame attached to the 22-year-old.
