Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, according to hair specialist Keera Howard, better known as The Hair Dr.
Speaking on Morning Mix, Keera said one of the biggest misconceptions about hair care is that everyone should only wash their hair once a week.
"There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach," she explained. "For many people, washing their hair two or three times a week – or even more often if needed – is the best way to keep the scalp healthy."
Keera also recommends shampooing twice, and sometimes even three times, to properly remove excess oil, styling products and product build-up.
"The first shampoo helps loosen dirt and oils, while the second cleanses the scalp properly. You'll know it's working when you get a good lather," she said.
She also highlighted the impact hard water can have on hair, explaining that mineral deposits can build up on the scalp and hair, leading to dryness and making hair more difficult to manage.
During the discussion, Keera also explored the differences between normal hair shedding, hair thinning and hair breakage.
She said while losing some hair every day is completely normal, persistent thinning or excessive hair loss may point to an underlying issue.
"Hormones, menopause, stress, illness, genetics and nutrition can all play a role in hair thinning," she explained. "It's important to identify the root cause rather than simply trying different products."
Keera encouraged anyone concerned about ongoing hair thinning or scalp health to seek professional advice, saying early assessment can help identify the cause and guide the most effective treatment.
