Traffic-Calming Plans Move Ahead for Tagoat as Speeding Concerns Persist

Plans to improve road safety in Tagoat are moving ahead after traffic surveys found that almost two-thirds of vehicles travelling through the village are exceeding the speed limit.

Wexford County Council is progressing a traffic-calming scheme for the N25, with funding now allocated for the design, tender and construction stages. The project will include measures aimed at slowing traffic through the village, where concerns over speeding have been raised by residents for several years.

The issue has become more pressing in recent years as activity at Rosslare Europort has increased, bringing a significant rise in heavy goods vehicle traffic through Tagoat. Thousands of vehicles now pass through the village every day, with traffic volumes increasing further during the summer months.

A traffic survey found that around 63% of vehicles were travelling above the current 60km/h speed limit. Under the proposed plans, the speed limit will be reduced to 50km/h, with new gateway signage, narrower traffic lanes and improvements at key junctions to encourage motorists to slow down.

The wider scheme will also include upgraded footpaths, improved walking and cycling facilities, landscaping and other public realm enhancements to create a safer and more attractive village environment.

Local councillor Ger Carthy has welcomed the progress, saying the increase in activity at Rosslare Europort has brought additional challenges for communities along the route.

"With the increase in activity in Rosslare Europort, that brings its own issues to villages like Tagoat. But I certainly welcome the latest announcement. We've allocated €200,000 for the design, tender process and Tagoat construction here."

Construction on the scheme is expected to begin later this year, subject to the completion of the design and tender process. Residents hope the long-awaited measures will significantly improve safety in the village for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike.
