Rathangan Church a central hub of the community, is in urgent need of a new roof. Celebrating its 150th anniversary three years ago, the church's roof has deteriorated to the point where the fabric is being held together by glue. A recent report has confirmed the situation is now a health and safety risk, with the roof needing a full replacement.
The church serves as the heart of the community, hosting services such as confirmations, weddings and funerals. The church is also vital to the nearby primary school and GAA club, offering a safe car park and access to sports fields and educational facilities.
Over the years, Rathangan & the surrounding areas have seen the closure of local businesses, including shops and post offices, leading to the loss of vital community infrastructure. Losing the church would further undermine the rural fabric of the area, with residents and organizations deeply concerned about the potential closure. The car park, which serves multiple community purposes, would also be unavailable.
The cost of replacing the roof is estimated at €1.3 million. So far, only €20,000–€30,000 has been raised, with these funds already used for reports and planning. The parish is applying for up to €250,000 from the Historic Structures Fund but still faces a significant shortfall.
The community is exploring options to raise funds, including the sale or re-mortgaging of a parish house. A generous parishioner has already pledged a six-figure donation, but much more is needed. The church's future is at risk, with work needing to begin this summer to prevent further damage.
The parish calls on local, regional and national leaders to support this vital project, ensuring the church can continue to serve as the community’s spiritual and social hub for years to come.
